VIDEO- Chely Wright on Oprah talking suicide, dating, & being true to herself

Chely Wright appeared on Oprah today. Chely recently came-out to People magazine and in her new book, Like Me. This is a beautiful interview, and although Chely is still unsure whether the truth has ruined her career, it appears the truth has indeed set her free. Chely looked radiant, and it’s obvious this truth had to be told, before it cost her her life.

Chely Wright Talks About Her Relationship With Brad Paisley and Says She Considered Suicide

Chely Wright  is currently on her media tour for her new album, “Lifted Off the Ground” and for her memoir, “Like Me.”

But, since she revealed on Monday through People magazine that she’s gay, that topic is front and center. In an interview to air today, Chely tells “Access Hollywood” she’s “all those things that country music is about: family, faith and country.” She says she just happens “to be homosexual.” And, she says she wasn’t truthful with Brad Paisley about her sexuality.  When they were dating she says she “could see the damage” she was doing to him so she “cut him off completely, cold turkey.”

Chely also says she had a private meltdown after lying to John Rich and telling him she wasn’t gay. And, she says she came close to suicide in 2006. She had a loaded gun in her hand but “something snapped” and she started to cry. At that point, she says she realized she had “too much to live for.”

Chely Wright Comes Out

People magazine will feature Chely Wright on the cover, but this appearance has very little to do with her music.  Chely is “coming-out” and telling-all that she’s homosexual.  In the article, Chely reveals that she didn’t come out earlier because there was no precedent set in country music.

“There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality,” she tells PEOPLE. “I wasn’t going to be the first.”

Now, Chely is ready to reveal all. The People article preceded a memoir Chely is releasing entitled Like Me, as well as her first album in five years, Lifted off the Ground.

Chely Wright Remembers Brittany Murphy

chely wrightbrittany-murphy-newjpg2

Chely Wright remembers the USO tour to Iraq she and Brittany Murphy took in 2003. On her Facebook page, Chely says:

“Brittany Murphy and I did a USO Tour to Iraq in 2003. She was really excited to see the troops to say thanks and even worked up a couple of songs to sing with the band. Her mom, Sharon, went with us on the trip. They were connected at the hip and proud to call one another “best friend”.

Chely adds that “Brittany was a free spirit, for sure, very nice, laughed a lot, and showed a genuine interest in others.” and says that Brittany’s death at 32 is “really sad news.”
