Country Comes Home: Grand Ole Opry Announces Sept. 28 Re-Opening of Opry House

Grand Ole Opry officials today announced that the show, displaced from its permanent home due to May’s historic Nashville flood, will return to the Grand Ole Opry House with a star-packed show Tues., Sept. 28. Among the artists scheduled for the show are Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels Band, Diamond Rio, Jimmy Dickens, Del McCoury Band, Montgomery Gentry, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Mel Tillis, and Josh Turner. The show will air live on GAC: Great American Country. Special events and artist appearances will follow throughout October in celebration of both the show’s return and its 85th Birthday.

The announcement came just before the Opry House’s signature element, a six-foot circle of oak wood taken from the historic Ryman Auditorium when the show moved to the Grand Ole Opry House in 1974, was returned this morning to its home center stage at the Opry House.  The circle, along with the full Opry stage, had been covered by 46 inches of water during May’s flood. Rescued immediately after waters receded from the Opry House, the circle has been painstakingly refurbished. The country music treasure was placed in its rightful spot with assistance from Dickens and Paisley. The two Opry members then took to the circle behind an Opry microphone stand for an acoustic performance of the country classic “Will the Circle be Unbroken.”

Dierks Bentley’s ‘Up On the Ridge’ A Labor of Love

Dierks Bentley is featured in this weeks CMA Close-Up talking about the struggle and desire of his latest album, Up On the Ridge. Originally, Dierks was going to release 2 albums in 2010…a mainstream, radio-friendly album and a bluegrass-inspired labor of love side project. As the album took shape, and Dierks dug deeper into his roots...Up On the Ridge became the album he’s always dreamed of releasing.

“I think the first thing I asked myself was, ‘Do you want to call this a side project and kind of have an out? Or do you believe in what you’re doing and want to stand up for it and act on faith and put your money where your mouth is when it comes to why you go into doing this?’” said Bentley, who co-wrote five tracks on the album. “You get known for a certain sound you’ve established — or you get known for having curly hair and you cut it off. People like to think of you as one thing, and Country is all about having a brand. But as a songwriter, it’s not just about winning the game all the time. It’s about trying to make great music that you will be excited about and taking a chance to veer left or right a little bit. I love playing for large audiences. I love what we’ve built. I don’t want to do anything to take away from that, and I don’t think I am. I think I’m just adding to it. Hopefully my fans that have been asking for me to do this for a long time, they know who I am. My records have always had a bluegrass song on there. This is just me reclaiming part of what makes me who I am.”

Even more surprising was how the record label, Capitol Nashville, and the media all jumped on-board ready to embrace the album.

“It’s always a risk to step out into a side project like this,”Mike Dungan [President and CEO of Capitol Records Nashville] said. “However, the music is so good and this was such a natural fit for Dierks that we were pretty confident that no matter what, we would have quality at the end of the line. And that’s exactly what we got. This is a kid who moved from Phoenix and discovered that whole acoustic world at the Station Inn and became a regular down there, first in the audience and then getting up onstage and playing with anybody and everybody. This is so much a part of Dierks’ general makeup and I think he found this record easier to make than a regular Dierks record. It’s such a natural fit for him and he knows the genre and the players and the music so well.”

The minute the TV bookers saw what this project was about and who the players were and the fact it was Dierks Bentley behind it, they jumped on it. In fact, in a lot of cases, they wanted him to come on the show probably before we would ordinarily want him to come on. We would like a lot of these appearances to hit around street date, but we’ve been doing them ahead of time because the bookers have been so anxious to get Dierks in place. TV bookers in general have an appreciation for things that are authentic, and I think that’s what they saw in this.”

Dierks is about to release the second single off of Up On the Ridge. “Draw Me a Map” features Allison Krause, and is my favorite song off of the album. I’m not usually a bluegrass fan, but after some heavy listening, Up On the Ridge grew on me…

“A lot of people who like bluegrass may hear this and go, ‘It’s not bluegrass. It’s got drums and electric bass,’” Dierks reflected. “Then Country fans may hear it and go, ‘That’s hardcore bluegrass.’ Different people will hear different things. I just hope my Country audience gets excited about hearing these acoustic instruments and these songs, and I hope the bluegrass people will love what we’ve done with some of these songs like ‘Bad Angel’ or ‘Bottle to the Bottom.’ There’s a Country circle and a bluegrass circle, and I tried to lay them on top of each other and find common ground in the two worlds. And I think this record really does that.”

Dierks will appear on CMA Fest: Country’s Night to Rock on September 1st on ABC.

Dierks Bentley Plays Fan at Billy Idol Concert

Dierks Bentley decided to be a fan for a night and take in a Billy Idol concert…The problem?? He decided too late, and the show was SOLD OUT.  Thanks to ‘Joann’, Dierks made it through the doors, but not before documenting the whole ordeal on Twitter.

“Draw Me A Map”- Dierks Bentley’s Next Single

Dierks Bentley will release “Draw Me A Map” as the second single off his bluegrass inspired album Up On the Ridge. The pleading ballad ships this week and goes for official adds on August 23rd.

“When we were making this album, we didn’t follow the rules of what a modern ‘country’ record should or should not sound like…we just tried to make a great album that wasn’t defined by genre,” explains Bentley. “To see country radio get on board and play this music…it really means a lot to me. The fans have been asking for “Draw Me a Map” ever since we released the album…I can’t wait to hear through my truck speakers!”

While critics continue to praise Up On the Ridge in its entirety, Bentley’s songwriting and delivery of “Draw Me A Map” has the Washington Post and Entertainment Weekly naming the ballad as their most recommended track.

“The wistful ‘Draw Me A Map’ ranks among Bentley’s most poignant ballads, with its aching lead vocal performance.” Paste

“’Draw Me a Map’ finds Bentley softly pining for a route back to his lost lover’s doorstep, those clarion pipes sounding more genuine than ever.” Washington Post

“Bentley’s ballads remain one of his many strong points. ‘Draw Me A Map,’ a song he and Randall co-wrote, is a good example.” Pittsburgh Post-Gazettet

You can take a look of Dierks singing “Draw Me a Map” above. Alison Krauss joins Dierks on the single. This is my favorite song from Up On the Ridge.

Hullabalou Festival Was a Big Money Loser

I think 2010 will go down in the books as the worst year for music festivals!  The latest money loser…. the three-day music festival last month at Churchill Downs called Hullabalou.

It featured Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews, Dierks Bentley, Bon Jovi and dozens of other bands. But, the parent company of the race track says the Hullabalou Music Festival lost more than $5 million. That’s about twice as much as it expected to lose. The Courier-Journal newspaper says Churchill Downs blames hot weather and low sales for concerts all over. The music festival drew more than 78,000 fans from 47 states.  Even though the festival was a big loss Louisville track had said it was going to do it again next summer.
