One Person’s Take on Why Carrie Underwood Was Overlooked for CMA Entertainer of the Year

With the CMA Award Nominations being announced last week country music fans have been all over the web expressing their excitement for their favorite artists and their feelings about those who they felt were left out.

An article in USA Today expressed their thoughts specifically as to why they think Carrie Underwood was overlooked in this years Entertainer of the Year category:

Thursday, Entertainment Weekly’s Whitney Pastorek posted a piece wondering why Carrie Underwood got overlooked for the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award. Her basic theories: 1) Maybe she’s too pop; 2) maybe voters still hold American Idol against her; and 3) sexism. Solo female singers have gotten no more than one slot in the Entertainer of the Year category since 1979, and that spot went to former Nashville Star second runner-up Miranda Lambert this year.

As a former member of the CMA’s board of directors, I’ll throw one other possible explanation into the mix, though, admittedly, it doesn’t make for a very satisfying reason: Sometimes CMA voters just get in a mood.

When that happens, it’s the musical equivalent of a “throw the bums out” political climate. The electorate — which, in this case, consists of members of the music industry, from artists to radio to record companies to assorted other support positions — gets fed up with the status quo and decides to recognize a new crop of acts that the industry wants to have represent it, not what the fans actually like best and support most.

Right now, Miranda Lambert is the best example of that act. And once voters started casting their votes for Lambert, they went anti-establishment every chance they got, putting Lambert in every available slot then voting for fiancee Blake Shelton (to the point that his Hillbilly Bone single with Trace Adkins, an entertaining novelty, will compete with two Lambert cuts for Single of the Year). And then they went for the Zac Brown Band, Dierks Bentley’s bluegrass project and Lady Antebellum (who aren’t exactly anti-establishment, but they do kind of represent a new paradigm for country groups and they are good buds with Lambert).

CMA voters usually do this sort of thing in one category each year, usually in Musical Event or Music Video. But it happened in a big way in 1995, when Alison Krauss won Female Vocalist of the Year, when Reba McEntire, Pam Tillis and Mary Chapin Carpenter had all had bigger hits and Shania Twain wasn’t even nominated.

It happened again with Dixie Chicks in 1999 and 2000: In 1999, the Chicks got an Entertainer nomination despite not having headlined a tour, and you could tell voters were looking for an excuse to give them the top award, which they did in 2000.

Voters sent the message in a big way in 2001, when the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack got not only an Album of the Year trophy, but also Single of the Year for Man of Constant Sorrow, despite the fact that the record never cracked the Top 40. (The Song of the Year in 2001? Murder on Music Row, in case the powers that be hadn’t gotten the message.)

And then there was 2003, when the recently deceased Johnny Cash got three final honors: Album, Song and Music Video of the Year. You could also make the case that Keith Urban’s EOTY win in 2005 — the year the CMAs were held at Madison Square Garden — were the premature crowning of a superstar as a way of interrupting Kenny Chesney’s string of wins and trying to look sophisticated in front of a New York audience.

I don’t know that I’ve ever seen the discontent extend as deeply into the nomination process as it did this year. That doesn’t mean Carrie should have gotten the snub — she did, after all, have a top-grossing tour headlining arenas — and Whitney’s theories likely play into the scenario, too. But when that sort of thing does happen, deserving artists get left in the dust, and that’s what I think happened to Carrie.

Brad Paisley’s Wedding Gift to Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood jokes that three Christmases from now, she will regift the large bowl that Brad Paisley and his wife gave as a wedding gift back to them. Brad says he can’t wait.

Brad says he and his wife Kim couldn’t make it to Carrie and Mike’s wedding on July 10. But, they did send that bowl as a gift and they already got their thank-you note. Together yesterday for the announcement that they’re hosting the CMA Awards again, Brad asked Carrie if she really wanted that bowl. She said yes and explained it’s not like a cereal bowl. It’s for display. And, she told him she hasn’t regifted it. Not yet, at least.

The CMA Awards will be held in Nashville on November 10th.

Carrie Underwood & Brad Paisley Will Host CMA Awards…Again

The CMA Awards will be held in Nashville on November 10th. During a Nashville press conference today, it was announced that for the third year in a row, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood will host the night’s festivities. I have to admit, they were pretty decent so I’m not bummed….Although, I would love to see Blake Shelton bring the show to a whole new level…We may not be quite ready for that yet.

Taylor Swift’s CMA ETOTY Award Has Everyone Talking

awards09_win_swift_female_3916_14139

We told you earlier this week that Wynonna had to back track and re-word some of her harsh statements that were made after Taylor Swift won her very first CMA Entertainer of the Year award on Wednesday night.   Looks like she is not the only one wondering if this has come all to quick for Taylor.

According to The Boot , Randy Travis, expressed mixed feelings about Taylor’s win, telling PEOPLE magazine, “As a writer, she is a phenomenal talent. When you look at the body of work that she has written at the age when she came into this business, it’s remarkable. It really is. But do I think that Entertainer of the Year might have been a little early? In my opinion, yes, for whatever that’s worth.”

Although some of the older more traditional artists are giving her a little flack most of country music is embracing Taylor’s hard work and talent.

While at the premiere of Tim McGraw’s new film “Blind Side’ Faith and Tim both told PEOPLE mag that Taylor was deserving.

Faith said “I think she worked her tail off the last couple [of years] and she deserves to win,”  with Tim adding; “I’ve been doing this a long time and she’s got a better head on her shoulders than I do, so I don’t know how anybody could complain about that.”

And the CMA Award Doesn’t Go To … (via CMT.com)

CMA Awards

As I was trying to recover from my CMA Awards hangover from last night I was fighting the urge to call up Tawny and start yelling. Not because she is the one who made the decisions I disagreed with last night but because she is the one that allows me to yell, scream and cuss without yelling back.

There were so many great surprises and wonderful moments but I also think that there were a lot of moments that were missing from the evening.  CMT.com blogger Alison Bonaguro summed up what most of us were thinking once the smoked cleared this morning:

Even being nominated, they say, is an honor. But after years of watching country awards shows, I have to say it that it felt so strange to NOT have Kenny Chesney accepting anything at last night’s CMA Awards with a heartfelt speech about being from East Tennessee. Or Rascal Flatts NOT joking around on stage, awards in hand, while they thanked God and their wives. And there was a big fat void without Keith Urban doing some charming Australian-accented thing (although he did win musical event of the year prior to the telecast) or Carrie Underwood trying to stop the tears welling up in her eyes while she thanked fans, country radio and her mom. I’m not saying I disagree with the decisions of the voters this year. I love that country seems to be ushering in a new era of artists. But it feels like that journey from yesterday’s winners to today’s went by way too fast.

Taylor Swift-CMA International Artist Achievment Award Winner

Taylor Swift and Brooks & Dunn

Yesterday, Brooks & Dunn passed the torch to Taylor Swift backstange, presenting the 19 year old with the International Artist Achievement Award.  The award is given to an artist who raises awareness of Country Music outside of the US.

“What Taylor has done for Country Music inside the United States is amazing in itself, but what she has done for the format internationally is outstanding,” said Tammy Genovese, CMA Chief Executive Officer. “She recognizes the importance of taking her music around the globe, and in doing so, has become a phenomenal ambassador for Country Music. She is very deserving of this Award.”

Taylor’s Fearless album has reached gold or platinum status in 14 countries.
