Country Music Looks Back at 2009 and Rings in 2010

happy-new-year-2009

Happy New Years Eve!  Today is the last day of 2009 so make it a great one!  Country Music Tattle Tale wishes all of our readers a very safe and happy new year full of great country music!    Take a look at what some of your favorite artists are thinking as they look back at 2009 and the plans they have for 2010.

Taylor Swift New Year's Eve 2009

Taylor Swift wants some spontaneity for her New Year’s resolution. She says her resolution probably will be something she determines “very close to New Year’s Eve.”

big kenny

Big Kenny of Big and Rich plans to ring in the New Year on an undisclosed island. It’s someplace where he can get a gnarly rum drink. Kenny says “it’s an original spot where some of the best pirateers in the world hung out, and they really make a good rum drink down there, too.” But, he won’t reveal the spot. He says, if he spills “the name of the rum drink, you might know where I’m going.” And, he says he doesn’t “want to release that information for fear that, well, it could end up being the largest New Year’s Eve party in the world, actually, on water.”

Jimmy Wayne Boxers

Jimmy Wayne is amazed when he looks back at 2009. He says the highlights were “definitely going on tour with Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley” and recording his current single “Sara Smile.” Jimmy says with those two things, he’ll “walk away from 2009 thinking, ‘Wow. That happened?”‘ He says he’s “very thankful for that.”

Phil Vassar

2009 “kind of all runs together a little bit” for Phil Vassar. He’s playing Las Vegas tonight. Then, he has break for a couple of weeks. Next, he dives into his 2010 tour. Phil says before his tour begins he’ll take that window and “sit and think about it and mellow out. Sit on your couch and go, ‘Wow. OK what happened this year?”‘

New Music Weekend – Ruth Collins

Ruth Collins

Ruth Collins was born in Western NY and was raised on a 13 acre grape farm that has been in her family for over 200 years. She is the youngest of four girls who were all raised as musicians but she was the only one of her four siblings who really loved and fell in love with her music. She sings, plays piano and learned the violin beginning at the tender age of three! She was a true child prodigy who later added the guitar to her repertoire.

She left home at the age of 18 and moved to Boston where she attended Berklee College of Music for 3 1/2 years before moving to Nashville in 2006 to become a songwriter.

You may recognize Ruth from televisions “Can You Duet” where she and a friend, Victoria Gibson, sang as a duo named “Wild Honey” where they made it to 6th place on the show. After leaving “Wild Honey” Ruth has been focusing on her solo career of writing and singing. She has had the good fortune to work with some amazing talent including songwriters who have written for Taylor Swift, George Strait, Rascal Flatts and Big and Rich. A plethora of talent to draw from for a talented young lady new to Nashville!

She has an amazing voice with a wonderful range and clarity to it that is easy to listen to and begs to be heard. Her song “Disappear” is a ballad of truth about many relationships and speaks of a hopefully easier way to breakup when “someone stays too long” and says they didn’t “build this bridge to burn it down”. The lyrics are so close to anyone’s heart about two people who just need to not be together anymore and is sung w/the accompaniment of her guitar. I really loved the song – tender and the lilting notes of her voice are so touching.

“Lesson Learned” is a soft swaying melody about falling in love the first time and the lessons we learn during life in romance – “We live and we learn and we crash and we burn.” She has a wonderful handle on new ways to express what we have all lived through and felt about life and her voice has just a slight raspy edge that gives the listener a picture of a combination of an innocent but slightly seasoned young lady singing about life. It’s an interesting combination and very pleasant listening.

“Chasing the Rain” is another ballad with piano accompaniment that showcases her amazing voice as she sings about being a fool that goes “chasing the rain calling out your name” and “praying for the wind to knock them down again”. It’s a song that parallels a love gone wrong with rainstorms and the fool she is that still wants to chase it anyway. Something many of us have done, huh? But she has the words to put it to music and actually make it sound interesting!

She is an amazing talent that should you certainly should be hearing a lot more from soon! To listen to her music please visit her at www.myspace.com/ruthcollins and you can follow her on Twitter and Facebook as well. A delightful young lady who also gives of her valuable time to charity – she is definitely worth your time!

Big Kenny Talks Breakup Rumors and His Solo Career

The “big” half of Big and Rich sat down with The Boot to talk about his new solo venture and addresses those inevitable breakup rumors.

“Yeah, that’s like Brooks and Dunn are gonna break up!” he says, somewhat dancing around the rumor but also slightly confirming it.

This intimate and laid back interview goes into the life of Big Kenny and definitely answers a lot of questions that fans may have about Big & Rich as a whole and Big Kenny as a solo act.

Head over to The Boot to read the full interview.

Big & Rich Help Out

Donna Moore was the fan turned victim when the stage at the Big Valley Jamboree collapsed; making her the one fatality of the incident.  Big and Rich wanna help out in a big way.  Ten dollars from each ticket sold for their August 25th show will be donated to the Donna Moore Memorial Trust Fund to benefit her children ages 10 and 16 who lost their mother.

We were immediately struck by the sadness of what happened at Big Valley,” John Rich said in a statement. “We’ve performed at Big Valley. We have stood on that stage with other artists and fans and the news really hit home with us. We immediately knew we needed to do something, so we invite all music fans to join us at Telus Field for a great evening and an opportunity to contribute to the fund in support of Donna Moore’s children.”

Big Kenny + John Rich=A Magical Equation On The Stage

Big & Rich have reunited for a summer tour. CMT sat down with them and asked about the new tour and how they will balance that with their solo ventures. They told CMT that their show will have all of the Big & Rich songs that we all know and love and then Big Kenny and John Rich will each sing songs from their individual albums.  They also talk about how their differences make them a “magical equation” on the stage and when writing songs together.  You can read the interview here.

Big Kenny also posted a twitpic letting us know the name of his new solo album.

John Rich Interview with CMTT Part 2

We posted Part 1 of our John Rich interview for you yesterday.

So now we know to expect all of the same fun and craziness that Big & Rich is out on tour this year.  They will also be bringing along Cowboy Troy and Two Foot Fred.  It sounds like the show is going to get expanded since both John and Big Kenny have been working on solo projects.  If you are a Big & Rich fan it sounds like a show that you won’t want to miss.  Check out their website at http://www.bigandrich.com for tour dates and cities.

Part 2 of the interview gets fun. This is our 10 quick quirky questions.  We get to hear about two of John’s favorite artists and his plans for future albums.  We also get a impromptu performance in “spoken word, reneck style”.  We also get to hear about his first kiss from a “smoking hot” girl when he was a kid.   I promised John that we would “get it all in there” so this is the full second part of our interview from start to finish.

Don’t forget to enter to win the “For Every King, A Mentor” contest at www.CrownRoyal.com. The grand prize winner will receive a trip for two to Nashville for a behind-the-scenes look into Rich’s performing, producing and songwriting career; a tour of the mansion where his Country Music Television show “Gone Country” is filmed and a personally-signed guitar. Rich will also host a country music insider’s tour of some of his favorite Nashville hangouts.

John Rich definitely gets people talking and I think that is what is most important.  His passion and love for country music cannot be denied.

John Rich Interview with CMTT

I was lucky enough to talk to John Rich this afternoon to get an idea of what fans can expect from the new Big & Rich tour that kicks off in Minnesota on June 12th.

I must admit that this was an intimidating interview for me. I have been a HUGE John Rich fan for a long time now and I know enough about him to know that if I wasn’t on top of my game for the interview that he would call me on it!   You can say what you want about John Rich but personally I LOVE him. He isn’t afraid to tell you how it is and he doesn’t apologize for who he is. During the interview he was very charming and is a professional who knows how to handle business.

Take a listen to the first half of our interview. You will find out what to expect from the upcoming Big & Rich tour, find out if John plans to tour solo for “Son of a Preacher Man” and find out how you can win a trip to Nashville to live a day in the life of John Rich and a special mentorship experience that is “fit for a king.”

Check back tomorrow for Part 2 of our interview with John.  It’s a really fun interview where he tells CMTT about his first kiss, we get a impromptu performance of a song John wrote called “If My Guitar Could Take I’d Be in Prison” and he tells us about future album and writing plans.

Check out more about the Big & Rich tour at www.bigandrich.com or find out how you can get a copy of “Son of a Preacher Man” at www.johnrich.com

Everyone Loves Country Music

John Rich is surprised at the number of urban artists who are turned on to country music as a result of his TV show, Gone Country.

He tells columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Janel Smith, “I walked into a nightclub in New York City in a Stetson hat and western suit. On stage it was Method Man, John Legend, Will-I-Am, some of the biggest urban artists and every one of them made a point to come up to me and say they love the Big and Rich music and country music, and they say how much they love Gone Country.”

John speculates the reason why artists of other genres gravitate toward country music is because everyone can relate to it.

I don’t think that it’s the show Gone Country that turns anyone on to country music.  They have those poor people some of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen.  I really don’t think that most of the country music artists that we know and love do the things that they have to do BUT….I do think that everyone can relate to country music and he hit the nail on the head with that statement.

Merry Christmas Eve – Roll Call Morning

Merry Christmas Eve to everyone!  I am so glad that Christmas is finally only one day away.  We have lots of family coming into town to celebrate Christmas with us here in Nashville.

I have lots to get done today so I am doing an early morning roll call.

CMIL found this great website that will help you track your favorite artists on tour.  It’s appropriately called Tour Tracker – http://www.tourtracker.com/.  They also posted Christmas stories from some of your favorite country artists.

Nashville Gab is talking about Keith and Nicole’s plans for their mansion in Australia.  Apparently, their million dollar view is being obstructed by hotels.

Nashville 4U is giving away a Randy Owen prize pack.  Visit their website to find out how to win.

The CMT Blog has a fun article about our troops coming home for Christmas.  Looks like they are toting around iPods that have lots of Big & Rich and Rascal Flatts on them.  If you read the article you will find that our troops are BIG country music supporters.

That’s all I have for now.  I will be back later with more.  Stay warm and have a Merry Christmas Eve.
