People are always emailing us telling us how NOT country Taylor Swift is. I beg to differ and usually try to refrain from putting a song or artist into a category these days BUT with the way that country music is changing it’s almost hard not to.
If you want to hear a beautiful but TOTALLY NOT country version of a Taylor Swift song? Here ya go! Compare the two and you can definitely hear the difference. Compliments of Kelly Clarkson.

I listened to both versions and they both sound “pop” to me. The only difference I could tell is that thet Kelly Clarkson can actually sing well…unlike Taylor Swift who has a limited range and vocal ability
Certainly sounds like Kelly … this is how the song should be sung … sounds great … and, needless to say … in KEY.
I agree with the two above posters. Kelly sounds so much better!
Kelly sure can sing! Luv her!
I LOVE Kelly’s version…but there is something special about hearing the person who actually writes a song sing it…more emotional connection…Every once in a while the artist sings it like they wrote it (ie Keith Urban’s “Making Memories of Us”) but I like Taylor’s version…Sometimes it’s not about perfect vocals…it’s about emotion. Luke Bryan released an early piano version of “Do I” and I LOVE that version…imperfect vocals w/out all the studio hoopla but so connected. Is Kelly a better singer…hell yes…Is Taylor a great singer? No…but she definitely has a connection w/her songs and her fans that creates something special…Let er rip…I’m sure I’m about to get torn apart for siding with Taylor.
The songs that this Youtube user has posted (including the one you posted) were *private* performances, not meant to be recorded nor shared, many of which happen to be unreleased, copyrighted material. Being the regular CMTT reader that I am, I’m disappointed that I found this video here.
I just wanted to state that I accidentally misspelled “disappointed.” I don’t want that to take away from the validity of my comment. Thanks.
Disappointed – Sorry to have disappointed you. This video was posted on YouTube and is available for everyone to view. We simply used the embed code that everyone has access to to share with our readers. This is one of those love to hate internet moments I suppose.
LOVE LOVE LOVE it… Kelly can sing anything
[...] Kelly Clarkson covered Taylor Swift’s “White Horse.” [...]
I think Taylor is a great singer, because as imperfect as her voice is, it is uniquely hers and communicates her songs in a way no other singer can. People that love her voice love it for all of its qualities, imperfect or not, and we hear the emotions she is communicating with her songs in her voice and her eyes and everything about her. Each singer is unique, and many singers with perfect pitch have absolutely no relateability with many people that hear them, whereas Taylor’s voice tho imperfect is a part of her entire means of telling her stories and commuicating with the human race about human situations.
I also want to say, that’s the voice God gave her, and she doesnt hide it, she uses it to the best of her ability and in doing so has used it better than many who have supposedly better voices have used theirs
Kelly Clarkson’s version > original version
Well said observer
yeah, well I fail to see a genre difference in it from one singer to the next.. it is what it is.. I suppose it’s a bluegrass type song.. I like this version better for sure.. nice job.
Thanks for posting this! While I respect Taylor as a person and artist, it’s clear that almost anyone blows her out of the water wth vocals. Kelly is an extremely gifted and expressive vocalist; hearing covers like this only make me wish that Taylor was a better vocalist.
Observer – “I also want to say, that’s the voice God gave her” – I agree but usually if God didn’t grant you with a good singing voice, you aren’t going to make it as a singer yet somehow Taylor did…that’s what I dont’ understand. Please note, I’m saying Taylor is not a good singer, however, I’m not taking anything away from her songwriting abilities. I think she is a very talented songwriter and I do agree with Tawny Tucker in the fact that there is something special about the person writing the song singing it. I think it does add something to the song to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth, even if that horse can’t sing a lick.
I’m puzzled about why Clarkson would cover Taylor. Just because she’s popular? I like Taylor’s soft vocals in her version better. Clarkson is a better vocalist but she’s a power pop rocker and on this song she sounds forced and uses too much vibrato. Taylor is more of a middle of the road than a power singer and she does a good job telling her stories.
It’s a lovely version of one of my favorite songs from FEARLESS. Kelly really gives it a different power – I like her slightly raspy voice. She sounds like the material has really brought her pain. Taylor’s original is pretty and sad, but Kelly’s is PAINFUL. Love it. There’s no reason not to like both versions. . .
